Every single person who teaches at Second Circle has studied here, in house, with us. We work together to hone and develop our practice as teachers. For the first time, we are extending an invitation to certified yoga teachers and fitness professionals to come and learn our method.
The Second Circle Teacher Development Program is an opportunity to learn with us and discover the philosophy behind our practice. If you want to explore the practice of yoga more deeply, while developing their eye for human body patterns, this program is for you.
format and curriculum
This is a two weekend retreat-style immersion for teachers of all styles who want to dive more deeply into their studies. We will cover:
Functional movement and building healthy patterns
Human beings evolved to perform a wide array of physical tasks. Some are fundamental and primary to our evolutionary design. Building a healthy yoga practice means supporting and reinforcing this basic design.
Practicing and teaching yoga in the modern world
We will discuss in-depth the ways in which modern movement patterns and sedentary lifestyles inform and challenge healthy movement and yoga practice, and how to meet these challenges in class.
Principles of Alignment
Our work is primarily based on Anusara yoga and the work of Thomas Myers in Anatomy Trains. We build yoga postures based on the concept of “healthy neutral” and human evolution.
How to construct and cue effective postures
It is important when teaching to know when and how yoga poses can fall apart, or “hide” the work of the practice. Many of these hiding places are common among students and can be effectively corrected in group classes. We will discuss these common issues and how to guide a more balanced practice.
Eastern philosophy, including Hinduism, Daoism, and Zen
Eastern philosophy is rich with insight and wisdom. At Second Circle we strive to humanize these traditions, making them relatable and coherent for a 21st century digital-era person.
Esoteric Theory of Vayus and Chakras
Whether seen as literal facts about the construction of the human being or insightful metaphors, the “winds” and “wheels” of esoteric yoga theory can guide our understanding of embodied practice and its teaching.
Refining language and communication skills
You can have all the information in the world. As a teacher, none of it matters if you don’t have the means to clearly share it.
How to "read" bodies
The more time we spend investigating human bodies the more we develop a skill for noticing their eccentricities and patterns. This training will provide simple keys for understanding the patterns of individual students in group classes.
Teaching the Second Circle Foundation class
Foundations is our central practice, it embodies our philosophy and methodology. In this training we will explore Foundations and its construction as a way of unpacking the ideas behind the practice.
And, you know, more stuff too.
Just ask your teachers at Second Circle, the information we work with fundamentally changes the way you engage the practice personally and professionally.
All graduates of the Second Circle Teacher Development Program are eligible to apply for a position as a Second Circle teacher.

The training will take place as two retreat-style weekends, starting Friday afternoon and concluding after dinner on Sunday. Each weekend will include 22+ hours of dedicated instruction, practice and discussion directly with Second Circle’s lead staff.
